Money - Part Five

Monday, May 4, 2015 11:32 AM
In Part 4 of our discussion about “Money” we began to dig into marketing. We looked a little more into Print ads so today we are going to look into Direct Mail.

Direct Mail is a much maligned tool that many people love to beat up. They talk about all of the junk mail they get, the intrusion into your home or office - oh the aggravation of it all!

The truth is that the reason that you get so much direct mail is because it works. That’s it, it works. Think about this for a second, do you think the people behind all of that mail are doing it because they want to lose money? Of course not, they do it because it keeps generating lots of money for them and they will keep doing it until it stops making them money.

Rather than complaining about your pile of junk mail figure out a way to make direct mail work for you! How?

First you should look into what direct mail can and can’t do:

·      It cannot hurt anyone (unless you are writing bad stuff and if that is the case you should go out of business).
·         It doesn’t harm anything (especially if it is recycled).
·         It doesn’t take a day off.
·         It doesn’t require health insurance.
·         It doesn’t whine or complain.
·         It can bring joy to someone’s life.
·         It can offer a product or service to someone that is in need.
·         It can lower your cost of doing business.
·         It can increase your sales.
·         It can broaden your reach and increase your market share.
·         This list can go on and on with more benefits of direct mail.

Of course there is a way to do direct mail and a way not to. If you are intrusive, obnoxious and in someone’s face, they will toss it. Speaking of tossing it, please keep in mind that American’s open their mail over the trash can. You will need to make sure that what you are offering is truly of value; this is the key to direct mail – value.

If someone finds value in what you are offering, they will read your information from start to finish. If they don’t find value it will end up being recycled in one form or another.

When thinking about your direct mail campaign you must also keep in mind that you have less than three seconds to grab someone’s attention. Your ad copy must be spot on; your headline must do its job and so forth.

What about your copy and your headline? Tune in to our next post and we will dig into them. For now, start thinking of direct mail as your friend and how you can use it to work for you.
