Getting Results-Part Three

Thursday, October 23, 2014 12:48 PM

In our last few post’s we have been discussing “Getting Results” but because of time and space we have had to break the information down into small, bite size pieces so we not only understand what to do but have some time to implement the information where we can.

A part of getting results of course is time management. One of the issue’s that we see all of the time is how much time people waste on non-productive tasks. Now I am not going to tell you that you should only be working on tasks that are in your income level or anything like that. While that is good advice there are extenuating circumstances like:

  • If you are just starting out, you ARE going to do all the jobs required.
  • There are times when you will HAVE to do lower paid jobs to keep everything moving forward.
  • You may have to do certain jobs until you can fill a vacancy, etc.

The reason I added this to this post is because there are those that are fretting over the fact that someone wrote a book about time management and said to never do these tasks but the person in business doesn't have the funds to hire others yet. Don’t fret over this, you will eventually outgrow it. We want to help shorten the time between now and eventually.

Back to managing your time; make a list of all of the tasks that you have to do in order to run your business. Now go back and prioritize the list. Don’t worry about people’s feelings and what they will think, this is about you growing your business quickly and successfully.

I am not saying put your family on hold (although you will have to at times), I am saying to cut out all of the distractions. If you have a meeting set up and the allotted time is 30 minutes and the person shows up 15 minutes late, your meeting is now 15 minutes, not 30. If you don’t stick with this soon all of your meetings will be late, or begin a pattern of people showing up whenever they want to – don’t let this happen to you.

Here is the best way to say all of this: Do what is important not necessarily what is urgent!

Now don’t confuse what I just wrote. There will be times when urgency takes over like:

  • Someone is bleeding
  • There is a gas leak in your building
  • The Country is under attack by Martian’s (it could happen, I know people that look just like Martian’s)!
  • I hope you get the point!

Before checking your emails in the morning, get the most important items on your list completed first. Email has a way of sucking you in and wasting your time. Same goes for social media, keep that until later (unless social media is your business).

One of the most important thing if not the most important thing that you need to focus on is getting new customers and taking care of the ones that you have. We will get further into those subjects in our next post.
