Communication

Thursday, July 17, 2014 9:14 AM
Communication is such a huge issue. Whether it is communicating with your family, your customers, your friends, your spouse and so on, it is extremely important. In this blog post we will not be able to deal with all aspects of “Communication,” in fact we won’t even come close! However, we will begin to understand why it is so important and how it affects your business.

If you want to accomplish anything in your life or if you are just trying to “get by,” you are going to have to communicate. The better you are at this highly elusive skill the better you will do in life. Not sure you believe that – think about this:

When Apple Computers kicked out their Founder Steve Jobs they went into a downward spiral. In fact things got so bad, most business people wrote them off as a lost cause. However they finally woke up and fired the guy that kicked him out of his own company and brought Steve Jobs back.

When Steve Jobs would make a presentation about a new project he would do it in a way that built up the excitement. Everyone was on the edge of their seat to find out what was coming. Steve Jobs knew how to communicate his new products to the public in a way that had them begging for more.

What was the difference? About a hundred billion dollars and still counting! In fact at one point Apple Computers had more cash reserves than the U.S. Federal Government! Hopefully I now have your attention.

When communicating with your staff, think about what you are trying to get across and then think about it from their point of view. What is important to them? How does what you are trying to do affect them, their families, their lives. Then figure out a way to deliver the information from that standpoint rather than from you telling them how it is going to be and then you have to deal with the fallout from that.

Take this same approach with your customers. How does what you are doing or would like to do affect them? How can you go about communicating your ideas, plans, services and products to them in a way that shows you have them in mind first and foremost?

Also, how about trying this type of communication at home with your family? You will be surprised at how far this will take you and the peace that will come from this approach.

Of course I know there are times that you have to make the final decision and bear the brunt of that decision but you will find your life is much happier, more prosperous and rewarding when you put communication and others first.

One of the best lines I ever heard was from the great Zig Ziglar when he said; “You can get everything you want out of life if you will help enough others get what they want.”

The best way to start doing this is through communication.
