A niche is "a place or position suitable or appropriate for a person or thing, a distinct segment of a market." according to dictionary.com. This means there's always a target market for whatever product or service you're selling. GREAT NEWS! The internet and the market in general have helped you out! A market for virtually any niche can be found online, no matter how broad and gigantic or narrow and small the market is, you can bet they'll be one. There's even a market for vegetables that resemble celebrities (you think I'm joking!).
So how is this good for you, the potential internet billionaire? BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO DO LESS WORK TO GET 2X THE BENEFIT!! Find something that you're really interested in or passionate about. This could be shoes, boats, cars, carpentry, clothing, music, movies, musical instruments, surfing gear, skateboarding gear, fishing equipment, the list is virtually endless.
Once you've figured out what it is your heart burns for, start doing something about it! One of the easiest things you can do is write a blog about it, this is a great way to quickly start to become an authority on the subject and get people to trust and follow you, provided of course that you're providing quality information.
Once you've started your blog, start thinking of places where you could advertise it. What places online are interested in your subject (you don't have to have just one niche, there are crossover markets! but that's for later)? What places would be happy to have you answer questions or write an editorial for their website or newsletter? What places online would be happy for you to submit articles? What forums can you post on that are in your niche? For example if your niche is culinary arts, submit lots of recipes to sites like recipes.com, thefoodnetwork.com, and cooksmagazine.com. Ask yourself lots of these questions! There are so many opportunities in just these few questions alone!
